Mary J. Blige Starring at GM Style Event on Chilly Detroit Riverfront
DETROIT — The Detroit riverfront near the site of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show will be enlivened by the appearance of multiple Grammy winner Mary J. Blige. The hip-hop diva will headline the by-invitation-only GM Style event on January 12.
Blige has sold 40 million recordings and will release her eighth album, titled "Growing Pains," next week. GM Global Design Vice President Ed Wellburn said Blige "embodies the new spirit behind our cars and trucks" and said music and fashion are "a natural fit" for this kind of Detroit-based event.
At GM Style, GM cars and celebrities travel down a fashion-show-style runway together with live music accompaniment. At last year's inaugural event, the audience numbered more than 1,200. Luckily, in view of the intemperate weather, the GM Style party happens inside a climate-controlled pavilion.
The Chevrolet Beat and the Saturn Astra Tuner Concept will both be present, and other participating cars and celebrities will be announced in the coming days. In 2007, actors Jennifer Hudson and Christian Slater, and hip-hop entrepreneur Jay-Z all took part in the festivities.
