2010 Indianapolis 500



Gentlemen Start Your Engines! The 94th Indianapolis 500 featuring the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS is scheduled to be run on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It will be the 15th Indy 500 sanctioned by the Indy Racing League. It will be the premier event of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series season.



It is the second race of the three-year long Centennial era, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the 100th anniversary of the first Indy 500.



It is scheduled for the traditional race date of May 30, and is expected to be the 53rd occurrence.



Qualifying for the event will revert to a system used between 1998 and 2000, in which the grid will be set across a single weekend rather than two.



As stated, The Official Indy 500 Pace Car will the the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS. The driver will be named at a later date.



The high-performance Camaro SS (as shown) is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, estimated at 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 408 lb.-ft. of torque (553 Nm). It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.



A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3, but also includes GM's fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It is estimated at 400 horsepower (299 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (535 Nm). It is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission that helps delivers an estimated 23 mpg on the highway.
